| The first International Sake Challenge was held on Tuesday
24th July at the Sheraton Miyako Hotel in Tokyo. Over 100 of the
leading Sake breweries from across Japan participated, submitting
a total of 300 Sakes.
For the first time ever, a Sake judging panel was created in Japan
comprising 16 of Japan's Sake experts and 14 of the world's leading
wine figures. The idea was to combine the best of Japan Sake judging
practice and international wine judging practice, and to put together
the panel's joint recommendations on what are truly the best Sakes
for Japan and worldwide.
The results have been published in Japanese and English on our website
www.sakechallenge.com. The intention is to provide an international
guide in Japanese and in English to these Sakes, allowing in particular
the international trade and Sake lovers to better understand and
taste the very best Sake offerings from Japan.
In this way, we hope to educate further Sake lovers worldwide,
and stimulate international awareness, understanding and sales of
Sake in all the major markets around the world where Sakes currently
distributed.
Of the 300 Sakes entered, 46 received a Seal of Approval, 73 a Bronze
Award, 47 a Silver Award and 10 a Gold Award. The 3 Sakes which
in the opinion of all the judges represented the very best of all
Sakes judged received a coveted Trophy Award - this was graciously
presented by HIH Princess Takamado in an Awards ceremony held at
the Grand Hyatt Tokyo on Friday 26th October at 14:30 hours.
It is believed that the International Sake Challenge is the first
serious attempt to establish an international ranking for Sake and
to educate Sake lovers worldwide. It is hoped that this in turn
will stimulate international understanding and demand for Sake,
and more generally promote a higher worldwide understanding of the
role of Sake in Japan's culture.
